Long CS – The CS stands for con sordino. With various controls over the sound of the technique. Long – A sustained long note on the instrument, perfect for pads.Live – A playable combination of long and short sounds that trigger differently depending on the playing style. The following preset list is copied directly from the Epic Strings user manual. The sound is rich, even lush, with, according to Spitfire Audio, the sound of AIR Studios.Ĭompared to major string libraries, Originals – Epic Strings presets are understandably limited, but that basic set is nice. In fact, Originals – Epic Strings was developed from an early version of Spitfire Audio’s Albion Library. The idea was to provide a basic set of string sounds with the quality of a major string library. And they priced it at £29 GBP / $29 USD / €29 EUR. Spitfire Audio made, in my opinion, a masterful decision to develop a great sounding, yet simple, string instrument. They are there to sweeten a mix, but they need to sound good – and they need to sit in the mix well – and, yes, they need to be easy to use, meaning fast.Įnter Spitfire Audio’s Originals – Epic Strings ![]() I write in more of a popular style, meaning Piano, Guitar, Bass, Drums, and some “color” instruments. When you are writing and recording, you need to keep things moving forward. Since I feel a rant coming on, let give one more “in addition”! I’m usually (maybe always) trying to work quickly. Whenever I try to use them, I quickly settle on a pad or electric piano sound instead. However you describe it, they are not what I need to sweeten a mix. They sound harsh, or synth-like, unrealistic, or they lack richness. In addition, and this is solely my impression, the smaller string libraries don’t fit in a mix as well as I would like. And all of this is in addition to actually learning to score strings! That library will likely be a major investment: money, hard drive space, possibly more RAM, and the time needed for learning to effectively use that library. You need to hear what you wrote, and if you are studying classic string composing and arranging, you need a string library to reproduce those classic pieces of music. When you start out learning to write string parts, you need to find a string library for your mockups. A not-so-basic sounding string section at a great price!
